New York City’s Protected Bike Lane Network
PCI Industries is one of the top site construction companies in the state of New York. PCI Industries has been commended for its financial contribution to the construction of the bike lanes in Yorktown which demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting the government in its efforts to keep cyclists safe on the streets.

A project called “Green Wave: A Plan for Cycling in New York City,” NYC’s Department of Transportation (DOT) developed a vision for city-wide protected bike lanes (PBL) that are fully-connected, with neighborhood routes made of conventional and protected infrastructure. Green Wave was created based on several factors that include safety needs, ridership trends, mobility and cycling studies, stakeholder outreach, and land use data. By the target completion year of 2030, the entire NYC area would have been covered by a safe and comfortable bike infrastructure.

There is an existing need for dedicated bike lanes and the neighborhood connections are seen as the leading solution. Primarily constituting conventional bike lanes, the neighborhood connections will be installed in areas with limited political and public support. Special emphasis would be given to the previously identified 10 Priority Bicycle Districts composed of seven in Brooklyn and three in Queens. Based on available data with the DOT, the Priority Bicycle Districts comprise only 14 percent of the present bicycle networks but accounted for 23 percent of serious injuries and fatalities caused by road accidents.

According to the plan, 80 miles of PBL are expected to be installed by 2021. The 75-mile neighborhood network of protected and conventional bike lanes will be installed in Bicycle Priority Districts. The entire plan is expected to be completed by 2030.
